VP: Moderation Must Guide Nation Life

Moderation and mutual respect in social and religious life are crucial for preserving unity and solidarity in Indonesia as a diverse nation consisting various ethnicities, cultures, and religious beliefs.
“Muslims must show moderation (wasathy) in all aspects, including in their mindset, behaviors, worship, and muamalat (transactions),” Vice President Ma’ruf Amin delivers remarks at the 1442 Hijri Isra and Mi’raj (the Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad) commemoration, through video conference, on Wednesday (10/3).
The Vice President said that Muslims in the Prophet Muhammad era were taught to be moderate people. They must face people from various backgrounds such as religions and ethnicities. Thus, it required patience, wisdom, righteousness, and persistence in conveying the message of Islam.
According to him, moderation must be upheld in life of the nation and state since the value is relevant to diversity in Indonesia.
“Promoting ukhuwah wathaniyah (national brotherhood), ukhuwah islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood), and ukhuwah insaniyah (brotherhood of mankind) is the right thing to do by the ulemas (Islamic scholars) to preserve national unity and solidarity,” he said.
He added that Isra Mi’raj is a monumental event for Muslims where the Prophet Muhammad experienced spiritual journey which proved Allah the Almighty’s infinite power and greatness.
“Prophet Muhammad, as the great leader sent to improve humankind with different backgrounds must obtain broad knowledge and understanding. Through Isra and Mi’raj, the Prophet was enlightened with experiences of Allah’s almighty,” he said.
On that occasion, the Vice President called on the public to cooperate and join hands in manifesting an advanced and prosperous Indonesia. He also reminded them to always maintain self-discipline in adhering to health protocols and to send prayers to God to end the pandemic.
“As one of our efforts to curb the pandemic, let us participate in COVID-19 vaccination which aims to build herd immunity,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiment, Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas asserted that the spirit of Isra and Mi’raj of moderation is in line with the value of the State Ideology Pancasila. Therefore, the implementation is really relevant to realize an advanced Indonesia.
“Spirits of Isra Mi’raj such as balance, blessings, discussion, and unity are those needed by the country. We should embodied the spirits as a foundation to maintain harmony in diversity of backgrounds, ethnicities, and religious beliefs in order to manifest our noble value, namely a united nation based on the values of Pancasila,” he said.
