COP26: Indonesia’s Climate Change Control Shows Remarkable Improvement

Indonesia holds a key position in the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) as it has showcased significant improvement in measures to control climate change and its impacts.

Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar on Monday (01/11) said that Indonesia’s improvement is concrete and acknowledged by various sides.

For the record, this year’s the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Glasgow, the United Kingdom (UK) is aimed at strengthening commitment to realize carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Indonesia is set to reach net zero emissions by 2060 but we’ll try the best to do it sooner. It can be measured from [the total of emissions from] energy and industry, as well as waste management,” Siti Nurbaya Bakar said.

The Minister went on to say that sustainability is the key point to the implementation of climate change agenda and the nationally determined contributions (NDC).

Besides setting a target, she said, a country must also work continuously and observe implementation of the policies on the ground in an effort to speed up the target realization.

In the event, Indonesia also affirmed its commitment to support the UK’s presidency to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and the Indonesian Government will improve its policies, observe the rising of global temperature in the last century from data on climate provided by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).(PRESIDENTIAL SECRETARIAT/UN) (RAS/EP)
