President Jokowi reaffirms PM Shtayyeh of Indonesia’s Commitment to Supporting Palestinian Struggle

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo reaffirms Indonesia’s continued commitment to supporting Palestinian struggle to become an independent and sovereign country, with self-determination and East Jerusalem as its capital city.

This commitment was reaffirmed by the Head of State during a bilateral meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Ibrahim Shtayyeh on the sidelines of the World Leaders Summit (the COP26 Summit) at the Scottish Event Campus, Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday (01/11).

“Palestine will continue to remain important to Indonesia,” President Jokowi said.

In the meeting, President Jokowi addressed several issues of concern to Indonesia with respect to Palestine. Firstly, Indonesia is gravely concerned about, and condemns, the continued violations committed by Israel. Therefore, Indonesia proposes the establishment of an international mission that serves as the eyes and ears of the world on the various incidents transpiring in Jerusalem.

“Indonesia has, on various occasions, proposed the establishment of an international mission in Jerusalem in order to ensure the security and safety of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, and to protect the status of Jerusalem as a holy city for three religions,” he expounded.

Secondly, Indonesia also promotes credible multilateral negotiations.

“Indonesia stands ready to encourage the International Quartet to reengage in peace negotiations based on international parameters in order to achieve a “two-state solution” where they are able to lead a peaceful coexistence. I reaffirm that Indonesia continues, and will continue, to support the struggle of Palestine in various international fora, such as the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement,” the President said.

Thirdly, Indonesia also gives attention to the unity of Palestine, which is of paramount importance to the struggle of Palestine.

In the meeting, the President was accompanied by High-ranking Officials that consisted of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Retno L.P. Marsudi, and the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and accredited to Ireland and the International Maritime Organization, Desra Percaya.
