President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called for all member economies of Asia-Pacific Economic Partnership (APEC) to immediately rebuild themselves by strengthening partnership in order to rise together, to be strong together, and to be sustainable amid the global economic recovery that is still full of uncertainty.

The President made the statement Jokowi in his remarks at the virtual 28th APEC Summit from the Novotel Lombok Resort and Villa in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province, Friday (12/11).

To that end, the President called for APEC to focus on three main points.

According to the President it is important to allow a safe mobility in the region [APEC region] to boost economic recovery. All APEC member economies must also accelerate vaccination drive, he added.

In addition to vaccination, all members, the President added, have to agree on adjustments on travel policy for vaccinated travelers.

The President also said that APEC must also build a more resilient global supply chain ecosystem, given that the disruption to global supply chain and logistic has brought a major economic impact.

President Jokowi also underscored that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught all countries that the world needs even global supply chain that does not only relies on one or two countries.

The global supply chain, he added, is needed to mitigate production gap of vaccines, medicines, medical equipment, and other important medical products.

The Head of State also pushed for transition towards sustainable and green economic development as it will be the future of the global economy.

Therefore, development policy must address climate change and goes hand in hand with economic growth and social welfare, he added.

“APEC must be able to facilitate investment and technology transfer in low-carbon economic sector. Sustainable and green transitions must be increasingly integrated into APEC’s partnership frame work,” he remarked. (PRESIDENTIAL SECRETARIAT/AIT) (AP/EP)
