President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Tuesday (23/11) inaugurated Karalloe Dam in Tompobulu District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province.

“[The construction of] Karalloe Dam costs a budget of Rp1.27 trillion. Today, alhamdulillah, it has been completed and ready to be inaugurated,” President said in his remarks.

The dam that has capacity of 40.53 million cubic meter and can irrigate up to 7-thousand-hectare of farming land in Jeneponto Regency. The operation of the dam is also expected to increase the intensity of planting and improve welfare of farmers.

“Previously, farmers could harvest paddy only once, and other plants once. Next time, insya Allah, they could harvest paddy twice and then other plants once; hence it will increase the farmers’ income and welfare,” the Head of State said.

Besides offering benefits for farming sector, Karalloe Dam also has the potential to reduce flood up to 49 percent, the President added.

“We remember that in 2019, Jeneponto was struck by severe floods. With Karalloe Dam, the water flow of flood can be reduced by up to 49 percent,” the President added.

The dam has also the potential to contain raw water as much as 440 liter per second and can be used to generate 4.5-megawatt electricity that will bring benefits for the local people.

“The Karalloe Dam can also bring positive impacts on the local people as it can manage the water. It can also be used as an electric generator and can contain raw water, all of which are for the benefits of the people,” he remarked. (DND/UN) (AW/EP)
