Remarks of President of the Republic of Indonesia During Meeting to Address Acute Kidney Failure Cases, Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java Province, October 24, 2022

On today’s meeting, we will discuss the development of medicines linked to kidney failure. I was briefed that it is because impurities from the solvents, such as propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, and the like were above the threshold set.

Based on the data on October 23, 2022, there are 245 cases in 26 provinces. Therefore, we have to pay attention to this matter.

First, prioritize public health. Do not take this lightly. This is a huge problem. On Sunday, I ordered Minister of Health to halt sales of medicinal syrups which allegedly cause kidney failure, while waiting for the results of investigation conducted by the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) on all medicinal syrups containing solvent. We do it in open and transparent manners, while taking into account prudence and objectivity.

Second, the BPOM must immediately withdraw and stop the circulation of medicinal syrups that have been proven to contain ingredients linked to kidney failure. It would be better if the name of the products are announced and informed to the public.

Third, Ministry of Health should investigate all factors contributing to kidney failure, be it from the medicines or other external factors. We must be sure about this. Clinical trials must be conducted. Observe cellular laboratory [result] on the affected kidneys so we can ensure what are the causes of kidney injury, particularly in children.

Fourth, prepare free healthcare for the patients. Procure medicines that can treat and cure acute kidney injury patients. I also order for free medicines for the patients. This is crucial.
