President Jokowi Wednesday (01/18) delivers his remarks on the domestic workers’ protection bill (RUU PPRT) at the State Palace, Jakarta.

Affirming the Government’s commitment and great efforts to provide protection for domestic workers, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo pushed related officials to accelerate the passing of the domestic workers’ protection bill (RUU PPRT).

“To accelerate the passing of the PPRT bill, I ordered Minister of Law and Human Rights and Minister of Manpower to immediately coordinate and consult with the House of Representatives and all stakeholders,” the President said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (01/18).

The President stated that it has been more than 19 years and still the bill has not been passed. Moreover, the current labor law in the country does not specifically and explicitly regulate domestic workers.

“The PPRT bill has been included in the 2023 list of priority bills and this will be the House’s initiative,” he added.

For the record, the number of domestic workers in Indonesia is estimated to reach four million people and they are vulnerable to losing their rights as workers. It is expected that the PPRT Law will provide protection to these domestic workers.

“I hope the PPRT Law can be passed soon and provide protection for domestic workers as well as employers and labor suppliers,” he remarked. (MAY/UN) (FI/MUR)
