First Lady Ibu Iriana Jokowi Friday (07/28) visited Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Panda Base) in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China.

During her visit, the First Lady observed a number of pandas that were bred at the research base.

Upon arrival at around 08.30 local time, the First Lady immediately headed to the Starry Sky Giant Panda Pavillion, a museum filled with history and facts about pandas.

“How tall can they be?” the First Lady asked.

“They can reach up to 1.8 meters and weigh up to 180 kilos,” the staff said.

Afterward, the First Lady also stopped by the panda breeding center to visit the panda cubs and their mothers.

For the record, established in 1987, Panda Base is an ex-situ panda conservation center with the world’s largest population of captive giant pandas and captive red pandas. In 2022, a total of 237 giant pandas and 169 red pandas were recorded at the base. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (FI/LW)
