President Jokowi Encourages Indonesia’s Community for Wearing Kebaya

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Sunday (08/06) opened kebaya fashion show “Istana Berkebaya” in front of Istana Merdeka, Jakarta.

The President expressed hope that this event will encourage Indonesia’s community to wear kebaya (traditional Indonesian blouse) on various occasion.

“We wish [kebaya] is not only worn by Ministers or in governor’s office but also worn by people in general. We wish that people will love and enjoy wearing Kebaya on every occasion and all event in Indonesia” the President said.

The President went on to say that kebaya represents character and identity of Indonesian nation which are elegant and modest.

“We want to remind all to return to our character and identity since, once again, kebaya represents our character and identity as Indonesian nation, Indonesian women that are elegant, graceful, well-mannered, and modest” he said.

President Jokowi also stated that there are many types of kebaya in Indonesia such as Encim kebaya from Jakarta and also Sundanese, Javanese, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi kebayas. Therefore, the President wished that this event will be held in other regions in Indonesia and encourage new creation, design and innovation of kebaya that represents Indonesia’s diversity in the future.  (KS/UN) (SS/RAS)
