President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that the next national leader will determine the future of Indonesia to become an advanced country.

The President also said that Indonesia’s chances of achieving this goal are only within the next thirteen years.

He made the statement at the Inauguration of the Management of the Central Leadership Council (DPP) and the Opening of the 2023 Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) National Working Meeting (Rakernas) at Benteng Field, Medan city, North Sumatra province, Saturday (08/19).

“The opportunity (to become a developed country) is only within the next thirteen years. So that the future leaders will very much determine whether our country can jump forward or not,” said the President.

He went on to say that this opportunity can be seen from the great potential that Indonesia has. One of them, currently Indonesia is considered to be in the top five countries with the strongest economy in the world.

“With the potential that we have, we can be included in the top five strongest economies in the world. But the challenges are not easy either,” he said.

Therefore, President Jokowi said that Indonesia’s leaders in 2024, 2029 and 2034 will determine Indonesia’s future in order to get out of the middle-income country trap.

“The leadership in 2024, 2029, 2034 will be very decisive,” he said.

Furthermore, President Jokowi also said that there were a number of countries that failed to take advantage of this opportunity so that they still become developing countries today.

“I have reminded all of you couple of times. Latin American countries in the 1960s and 1970s have entered into developing countries like we are now but they are stuck there because when they have the opportunity, they don’t use it optimally,” said the President.

The President added that the public must be careful in choosing the next Indonesian leader. This is important in order to make the most of the opportunities so that we can leap to become a developed country.

“All of us have to be very careful in choosing our leaders so that we can make our leap to become a developed country with a GDP that meets the standards of developed countries,” he said. (KS/DK/UN) (EST/LW)
