President Jokowi, US VP Kamala Harris Discuss Indonesia-US Strategic Partnership
On the margin of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo held a bilateral meeting with the United States Vice President Kamala Harris in the Kakatua Room at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, on Wednesday (09/06). During the meeting, President Jokowi expressed that the United States is a comprehensive strategic partner for ASEAN.
“As a comprehensive strategic partner, the US plays an increasingly significant role in the success of ASEAN meetings, including ensuring the relevance of the East Asia Summit,” said the President.
In the meantime, Kamala Harris, in her remarks, expressed her appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership in ASEAN 2023. She noted that Indonesia’s leadership has made a priority for ASEAN to deliver concrete results with a particular emphasis on economic growth.
“Indonesia is an important partner and friend to the United States. We have a longstanding friendship and relationship that help enhance the prosperity and security for our nations and free and open Indo-Pacific,” Kamala Harris stated.
In a separate statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi explained that President Jokowi and the US Vice President discussed concrete action plans to realize a comprehensive strategic partnership.
“In the bilateral meeting between President Jokowi and Vice President Harris, they discussed the plan for the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and the United States, proposed by the United States, as well as the joint action plan,” she said.
Furthermore, during the meeting, President Jokowi also emphasized the expansion of market access through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) scheme and the implementation of previously agreed-upon supply chain cooperation.
“Also the establishment of a Critical Minerals Agreement (CMA) for cooperation related to critical minerals and the realization of the Just Energy Transition Partnership,” she added. (BPMI SETPRES/UN) (AS/RAS/MUR)
