DEFA Serves as Mainstay of Realizing Epicentrum of Growth

Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) is one of the mainstays promoted by Indonesia’s chairmanship in order to realize the ASEAN’s vision as the epicentrum of growth, according to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

“It is a master plan set during Indonesia’s chairmanship that includes a comprehensive agreement on digitalization covering digital talent, digital ID, cyber security, retraining, reskilling, infrastructure, interoperability in ASEAN,” Airlangga said after the Closing Session of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, in Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, on Thursday (08/07).

The Coordinating Minister went on to say that ASEAN’s digital economy is estimated to double in 2023.

Another achievement in the economic sector is creating electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. Airlangga mentioned that ASEAN Leaders Declaration on the Developing Electric Vehicle Ecosystem is an important achievement in Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN in 2023.

On energy security, the Coordinating Minister elaborated that the achievement has shown in improving cooperation in the energy sector.

“One of the concerns of Leaders’ Declaration is interconnectivity of the energy which strengthens Trans-ASEAN Power Grid,” he said, adding that leaders in the 43rd ASEAN Summit have also agreed to encourage the implementation of Chiang Mai Initiatives dan Local Currency Transaction (LCT).

Another achievement of Indonesia’s chairmanship is attained through ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) which gave concrete results including 93 projects in an amount of USD38.2 billion. Precisely, there are 81 projects amounting to USD34.53 billion in the subthemes of green infrastructure and resilient supply chain, 4 projects amounting to USD736.36 in the subtheme of sustainable and innovative funding, and 8 projects amounting USD2.94 in inclusive digital transformation.

Related to food security, ASEAN’s achievement under Indonesia’s chairmanship has resulted in ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Response to Crises. ASEAN countries and partners have agreed that food security in ASEAN is important to mitigate natural disasters and climate change. (DK/SLN/UN)(AW/MUR)
