President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has extended a warm welcome to the Indonesian national football team for their victory over Vietnam in the second match of Group D during the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

“Indonesia secured a 1-0 victory against Vietnam. I watched the game until midnight and it was truly impressive,” the President said in his statement at the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex (GBK) main stadium, Jakarta, Saturday (01/20).

On Friday (01/19), the national team took the lead through a goal scored by Asnawi Mangkualam in the 42nd  minute in the match at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Qatar.

The captain’s goal from the penalty spot came after striker Rafael Struick was brought down by his opponent in the penalty box.

Following these results, the Garuda team is currently in third place in the Group D standings with three points from two matches.

Indonesia still has hopes of making it to the next round and will be facing Japan in the final match of the group phase. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RIF/EP)
