President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited Lacaria Market in North Kolaka regency, Southeast Sulawesi province, on Tuesday (05/14) to inspect staple food prices’ stability and stock availability a month ahead of Eid al-Adha, which is expected to fall on June 17.

The President expressed satisfaction with market conditions, especially regarding the low price of rice and the sufficient stock.

“Well, I believe the price is excellent, especially for rice,” the President said.

“I was surprised that local rice is sold at Rp11,000 per kg for medium [quality], while premium rice is at Rp13,000 per kg, making it a good price.”

The President added that there is no concern regarding rice stocks as the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) reserve is currently at 1.8 million tons, higher than the usual 1.2 million tons. “So, there is no problem with the stock,” he said.

On the price stability of other goods, the President also responded to it positively. “I found that shallots are 35 (thousand per kg), and garlic is at Rp50,000. I think the prices are still good. The shallot price is lower than in Java, with a wide margin,” he said.

Ahead of Eid al-Adha, the President did not express any particular concern about price spikes as market conditions appear to be stable from his last two visits.

“I have been to two markets and the prices are good, especially for rice, which I was a bit worried about because the local production is also abundant. There is no problem,” the President said.

This visit shows the Government’s continuous efforts to ensure price stability and availability of basic commodities for the community, especially ahead of major holidays such as Eid al-Adha. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (FI/MUR)
