Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung delivered a press statement after a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Friday (5/2) afternoon

The Government has decided to start the development of waste-based power plant. There are seven cities as the pilot project, such as: Jakarta, Bandung, Tangerang, Semarang, Surabaya, Solo, and Makassar.

“Most of them are big cities which waste production is more than 1,000 tons per day, whereas Solo is under 1,000 tons. Solo is included in order to make this city as a pilot project for medium-sized cities which waste production  is 200-250 tons per day and it is expected to be able to cooperate with its surrounding cities,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said to the journalists after a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Friday (5/2) afternoon.

He explained that the appointment of these seven cities will be regulated in a Presidential Regulation that will be proposed by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy collaborating with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs.

“The Government hopes with this appointment, waste problem, that become a very serious problem for big cities in Indonesia, could be solved,” Pramono said.

Regarding purchasing mechanism of the electricity generated from the waste, according to Pramono, will be regulated in a Presidential Regulation that is being prepared by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy.

Previously, when leading a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, in Jakarta, on Friday (5/2) afternoon, President Joko Widodo reminded about waste management and how to process it into electric power. “I don’t know how many times we discussed it. I hope this will be the last meeting. We decide it and immediately start the project,” the President said.

The President reminded that he already asks several times to create a technology to manage the waste effectively so that waste problem in big cities could be solved. Several cities have garbage bank program and the habit to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

“This afternoon, I think we will discuss, once again, waste as the source of electricity which hopefully will add our supply,” the President said. (FID/JAY/ES)(MMB/YM/Naster)
