Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on Friday (11/3) visited Gondang Dam in Kerjo Subdistrict, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java.

During the visit, the President said that the construction of the dam is already 24% finished and is expected to be completed at the end of next year because the construction is done in three shifts: morning, afternoon, and evening.

According to the President, the Gondang Dam would irrigate 4,800 hectares of paddy fields, located both in Karanganyar and Sragen.  However, he said that the dam will irrigate 80% of paddy fields in Sragen.

The President believes that the dam would boost production, both rice and other agricultural products.

“In Karanganyar, the Regent told me that there is only Gondang Dam. The Regent said another one is in Jelantah, but we haven’t decided it yet. We’re going to check in on the ground.” the President said.

President Jokowi went on to say that last year, the Government built 13 dams and this year the Government will build 8 dams and there are still 28 dams to be built.

The President also said that some dams are targetted to be finished in 3 years, some in 2.5 years and some in 4 years.

“It depends on the size of the dam,” the President said.

Besides visiting the dam, President Jokowi also visited a building of state-owned logistics agency (Bulog) in Triyagan, Karanganyar, on Friday (11/3).

The President arrived at 10.45 am Western Indonesian Time, accompanied by Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono and Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo.

After inspecting Bulog building, the President told reporters that the visit was an unscheduled visit and said he also wanted to know and check activities done at the Bulog Building. Afterwards, the President performed Friday prayer at Baitul Imah Mosque, Karanganyar, Central Java. (SLN/ES)
