President Jokowi meets with the Central Executive Board of the Association of Indonesian Mechanical and Electricity Contractors (AKLI) and the Central Executive Board of the Association of Indonesian Electrical Professionals (APEI) at the State Palace on Wednesday (15/6)

President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo admitted that many people have a reservation about the Government’s plan to develop programs to generate 35,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity and 46,000 kilometers of transmission networks within the period of 5 years will be reached because to date or during 70 years of Indonesian independence, Indonesia only has 53,000 MW.

Nonetheless, the President said the 35,000 MW is not a target but a need that must be met immediately if Indonesia aims to be a developed country, if small and medium enterprises in the villages want to develop and if Indonesian children in many villages, regencies and cities want to be able to study during the night.

“So I have told my ministers. Come what may, we have to complete this program. If we usually do the project in one shift, now we have to do it in three shifts during day and night,” President Jokowi said to the Central Executive Board of the Association of Indonesian Mechanical and Electricity Contractors (AKLI) and the Central Executive Board of the Association of Indonesian Electrical Professionals (APEI) at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday (15/6).

President Jokowi went on to say that until Desember, the Government has completed 17,300 MW out of the 35,000 MW and the President has visited some of the projects that have started.

Nevertheless, the President reminded that this is a big task.

Therefore, the President said that he would be very happy if members of the APEI and AKLI can be involved in the 35,000 MW project.

“Once this project is finished, I hope you can also be involved in the distribution of electricity to households, industries, and many others. Who can do that? It’s none other than all of you. PLN (State-owned Electricity Company) cannot do it alone,” President Jokowi said.

Joining the President during the event were Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said. (FID/ES)(Naster/EP/YM)
