The upcoming Asian Games on 18 August to 2 September 2018 becomes a good opportunity to increase the number of foreign tourists’ visit. In order to encourage the athletes who will compete and as a promotional tool of the 2018 Asian Games, Jakarta residents had the opportunity to enjoy the 18th Asian Games Parade on Sunday morning (13/5).

The parade was enlivened by performance from various parties, including the Government, state-owned enterprises, private sector as well as several communities that give their support to the organization of the 2018Asian Games.

The parade started from Monas Square, passed through Sarinah Building, Thamrin, and then ended at the office of the Ministry of Communications and Informatics.

This event was held to commemorate 100 days prior to Asian Games. It involved 43 groups with a total of 5,000 participants. Ministry of Tourism expressed their support by inviting Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) in the parade.

The parade was begun by a group that brought the national flags of Indonesia as well as other participating countries, and presented the mascot of the 2018 Asian Games. They are Kaka (one-horned rhinoceros), Atung (Bawean deer), and Bhin Bhin (Cendrawasih bird).

Subsequently, representatives from the Government, state-owned enterprises, private companies and communities presented their unique performance and colorful costumes.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the parade was an effort to bring the crowd.  In addition to showing achievements, it also became an event to enhance friendship with other countries. Creativities from participating countries of the 2018 Asian Games were attractively displayed.

“The Asian Games fever should be disseminated. The Games becomes the biggest event in the history of Indonesia. There are no problems related to the venues and security. Our athletes have practiced as well,” Kalla said.

The 2018 Asian Games is the second event held by Indonesia after the last one in 1962. At that time, Indonesia for the first time became the runner up. There were 24 countries and 3,000 participants joined the 1962 Asian Games. This year, there are 45 countries with 18,000 participants that are going to take part on the Asian Games.

“Asian Games 2018 is growing six times bigger compared to 1962. With this parade, all people are expected to know the upcoming Asian Games 2018, especially the residents of Jakarta and Palembang,” the Vice President said.

Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya appreciated the positive response from people. For him, their support also means a positive response of the people to tourism in Indonesia.

“The enthusiasm of the people is remarkable. They pay more attention to the 2018 Asian Games through this parade. This parade shows a great and unique content, full of ornaments and colors. Asian Games branding messages are well delivered,” Arief said.

On the occasion, Ministry of Tourism presented Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) featuring Indonesian Archipelago and Asialight themes. The performance of the team directed by Dinan Fariz was enchantingly concluded the Parade.

Moreover, this international sports event also brings direct and indirect impacts that contribute to tourism in Indonesia. The direct impacts are an increase in international tourists’ arrival, infrastructure development, and economic development. Meanwhile, the indirect impact is high media value for Indonesia since the Games will put this country in the spotlight. There are 200 countries going to air Asian Games 2018.

“The Asian Games’ Media Value is so high. Thus, Indonesian tourism will be more popular because of this big sports event,” Arief said.
