In a bid to abolish dualism in Batam governance, the Indonesian Government has decided to transfer the authority that has so far been attached to the Batam Indonesia Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) to Batam Municipality.

“The President and Vice President have decided that dualism (in Batam) must be immediately stopped,” Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution told reporters after attending the Limited Cabinet Meeting on Development of Batam, at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Wednesday (12/12).

According to him, this means that BP Batam’s authority as the Central Government’s hand in Batam region will be carried out by Mayor of Batam. Regarding investment licenses issues, Darmin said that it can be processed through a one-stop integrated service (PTSP) there and the service will be improved in the future.

The Minister also emphasized that the BP Batam’s authority handover process to the Batam Municipality would be carried out immediately. He added that the Government still needs some time to prepare legal decision and he has set the target that the handover process will be finalized no later than 1 January 2019. (FID/JAY/ES)
