Amidst his busy schedule, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung gets a diphteria vaccine in his office, at Building III level 2, Ministry of State Secretariat, Jakarta, Thursday (21/12) morning. His spouse Endang Nugrahani (Hani) and his son Hanindito Himawan Pramono are also vaccinated. The vaccination is conducted by a doctor from the Ministry of State Secretariat’s clinic.

Dr. Mira, a general practitioner at the clinic, says that it is important to prevent the disease by getting vaccinated because the outbreak of diphteria has become an “extraordinary event” in a number of regions in Indonesia.<>

“Therefore, the Cabinet Secretary and his family want to get vaccinated,” Dr. Mira says.

As we all are aware, diphteria is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium Diptheriae. Signs and symptoms of this disease are fever of 38°C, gray coating called a pseudomembrane builded up in the throat and it is easily bleeding if the coating is released, painful swallowing, and swollen neck and throat or bullneck. Sometimes, the swollen throat is accompanied by a serious respiratory condition and snoring sound. “Diphteria attacks people who have no immunity, particularly children,” Dr. Mira says.(AGG/ES)(MMB/YM/Naster)
