The pandemic has brought impacts on and posed challenges to all Indonesian people, including businesspersons, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

However, the President expressed optimism that young entrepreneurs in the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) can make the most of the situation.

“I am confident that HIPMI members can turn challenges into opportunities, turn this disaster into economic rebound,” the President said during the 17th National Work Meeting of HIPMI on Friday (05/03) at Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java province.

The optimism, he added, stems from the spirit of HIPMI reflected in the motto “Fighting Entrepreneurs-Entrepreneur Fighters”.

The President added that HIPMI members must be able to fulfill the motto amid the pandemic, he remarked.

“Your struggle and hard work will serve as a big energy to transform Indonesia into a developed country,” the President said, adding that several HIPMI members assist him in the current Cabinet, namely Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BPKM) Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Tohir, as well as recently appointed Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno and Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi.

In addition, the President stated that the target of Indonesia’s economic growth in 2021 is 4.5-5.5 percent, and the key to achieving it is investment.

“As Head of the BPKM, Mr. Bahlil holds the key. Every day I call and ask him how much we can gain this year. How many trillions the increase can be. Who the investors are. How far the process has been. Whether the target is achieved,” he said, adding that those initiatives lead to many business opportunities and also job vacancies that in turn will bring prosperity to the people.

The President also underscored his directives regarding partnership between major investors, both domestic and foreign investors, and local entrepreneurs or MSMEs.

“I always order Head of the BKPM to connect and to partner investment /  investors, both foreign investors and major domestic investors, with HIPMI entrepreneurs, regional entrepreneurs,” he stated.

The partnership, he added, is intended to boost economic equality in regions, so local entrepreneurs can benefit directly from the investments.

The Government, the President added, also continues to be committed to encouraging MSME entrepreneurs to play a role in the national economic recovery by granting incentives and stimuli so MSMEs can secure and develop their business while boosting the national economy.

“I receive a report every day, every week from Head of the BPKM that in the first stage, Rp1.5 trillion has been executed for the collaboration between major investors and MSME entrepreneurs. This is quite a big figure, but we hope it will continue to increase with such patterns of partnership,” said the President.

The Investment Management Institution or Indonesia Investment Authority also allows investment to grow rapidly with a wider range of funding alternatives.

“Indonesia Investment Authority will accelerate investment in our country,” the President stated.

The President closed his remarks by encouraging HIPMI members to compete at the global level in a new context, adding that the global competition is very tight, marked with hyper-competitions and double disruptions, namely the fourth industrial revolution and the pandemic that changes many things.

Business fields, technology, and business models have changed a lot too, he added.

“Your role as young entrepreneurs is at an advantage because you can directly move to a new type of business with a new business model that has been trending recently. Upskill and reskill fast so that you can win the super tight competition,” he remarked. (TGH/UN) (DH/EP)
