Office of Deputy to Cabinet Secretary for Human Development and Culture Affairs on Thursday (28/3) held a Coordination Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction Policy to follow up President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s directive on the improvement of disaster alertness by taking on disaster risk reduction aspects during development planning.

Deputy to Cabinet Secretary for Human Development and Culture Affairs Surat Indijarso said that the matter should become the focus in doing regional development planning.

Surat also said that the implementation of the directive must be comprehensively studied so that the chosen measures will be relevant.

According to him, policies must have a strong conceptual basis and can be well-implemented. In addition, the President, he added, also wants the policies to be synergized, integrated, and applicable.

“Therefore, synergy and collaboration must be manifested in the implementation of disaster management policy in Indonesia,” he said, adding that there must not be any issues about overlapping tasks and functions.

“We hope that the disaster management policy can be carried out effectively, efficiently, and quickly, not only in the preventive but also curative aspects,” he added.

Previously, Assistant Deputy to Cabinet Secretary for Poverty Alleviation, Social Protection, Women’s Empowerment, and Child Protection Endang Tri Septa said that the Coordination Meeting was expected to evaluate disaster responses that had been carried out and to offer recommendations for the formulation and implementation of the disaster risk reduction policy.

“We hope that the knowledge and insights gained from the meeting can be used to provide inputs in the formulation and implementation of disaster risk reduction policy. It is a form of implementation of the supervisory function to follow up the President’s directives, to monitor the implementation of Presidential Regulations and Presidential Instruction, as well as to support the Cabinet’s management,” Endang said.
