In a bid to support fishery industry, it is deemed necessary to strengthen shipyard industry and increase its capacity as well as improve its competitiveness, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.

“In the past five years, we have been focusing on working to tackle fish theft and to safeguard our seas from illegal fishing so that we could feel the impact,” President Jokowi said in his introductory remarks at a Limited Cabinet Meeting on Indonesian Maritime Policy through via video conference, Thursday (19/3).

These efforts, the President added, have helped to preserve our environment and significantly increase the national supply of fish from 6.5 million to 12.5 million tons.

“We should continue to develop our maritime and fishery sector. The better our national fishery industry, the more fish stocks we gain,” the President said, adding that the production of capture fisheries should also be increased.

On that occasion, the President also said that the supply of fishery exports and fishermen exchange rate are expected to increase so fishermen’s welfare can improve.

“For that reason, we need several big leaps in managing our maritime and fishery industry ecosystems, which should be carried out starting from upstream to downstream areas,” the President added. (TGH / EN)
