President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed regional leaders to monitor the current situation related to coronavirus cases.

“I order all Governors, Regents and Mayors to continuously monitor the current situation and consult medical experts to examine every situation,” President Jokowi said during a press conference delivered at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Sunday (15/3).

The President also asked the regional leaders to consult the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to determine the status of each region and consider the possibility to announce non-natural disaster emergency status.

Based on the emergency status of the area, the President added, the apparatus of the regional governments, supported by the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and Central Government, should continue to take effective and efficient measures in dealing with the spread and impact of Covid-19.

The President went on to say that the regional leaders should make policy on distance learning for students and remote working for State Civil Apparatus (ASN). The President added that public service should not be disrupted.

President Jokowi further asked the regional leaders to postpone activities involving many participants, provide more test for Covid-19 infections, provide more medical treatment facilities by utilizing the regional hospitals and cooperate with private hospitals as well as with research and education institutions recommended by the Ministry of Health.

The President has also ordered the regional leaders to provide adequate budget support to be used effectively and efficiently.

“Referring to Law Number 24 of 2007 on Disaster Management, the Central Government and Regional Governments can use the budget quickly,” he said. (TGH/EN)
