President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said that digital connectivity, which will connect all corners of the archipelago, must uphold the sovereignty of the nation.

“The Government has worked hard to build our national connectivity. The digital connectivity must stick to the nation’s sovereignty in the midst of today’s globalization and hyper-competition,” the President said during the Launching of the 2021 Digital Connectivity Program and National Covid-19 Vaccination-themed First Day Cover.

The President went on to say that digital transformation is a swift and strategic solution to bring Indonesia to the future. However, the transformation must realize digital sovereignty and independence, which are pivotal in implementing digital transformation in Indonesia.

“Both digital sovereignty and independence must be an important principle in our digital transformation. We must ensure that digital transformation does not only benefit outsiders and increase imports. This is what I have always emphasized,” he said.

Therefore, the President urged that the transformation should be implemented by encouraging the use of TKDN (Domestic Component Level), domestic products, and push for the mastery of the latest digital technology by all citizens.

“We are not a nation that likes protectionism. History has proven that protectionism is detrimental. We also must not fall victim to unfair practices from the world’s digital giants,” the President added.

On that occasion, the Head of State expressed hope that digital transformation will be a mutually beneficial solution for all parties. Furthermore, the 2021 Digital Connectivity Program is expected to be an important momentum that connects the Indonesian people with new technology, new mindset, new global business opportunities, and new future towards advanced Indonesia. (FID/UN) (RIF/MMB)
