Education Minister: School Orientation Program Expected to Boost Students’ Character

IMG-20190713-WA0027Student orientation program is expected to strengthen characters of new students in preventing spread of harmful ideologies against Pancasila and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, Minister of Education and Culture Muhajir Effendy has said.

The program is usually held on the first day of school and this year sees first day of school starting on Monday (15/7).

The instruction to conduct the character-building orientation program is stipulated on Circular Letter of Minister of Education and Culture Circular 5 of 2019 on Strengthening National Identity Activities During School Orientation addressed to all of the Indonesian Governors and Regents/Mayors.

There are four important points outlined in the circular letter, namely:

  1. Optimizing student orientation program ??to strengthen the students’ characters in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 87 of 2017 on Strengthening Character Education;
  2. Developing student orientation program ??with various creative, interesting and actual activities that can strengthen religious and national characters to implement anti-radicalism education for students;
  3. Implementing comprehensive programs to strengthen students’ character education through creative and interesting intra-curricular, extracurricular and non-curricular learning; and
  4. Establishing cooperation with relevant ministries/institutions, such as the Agency for the Implementation of State Ideology of Pancasila (BPIP), Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Ministry of Defense, the National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT), the National Defense Forces (TNI), the National Police and other non-governmental organizations in implementing character education programs to students.
