General elections are a democratic fiesta and an important opportunity to elect leaders and representatives, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has said.

“Do not let elections and different political preferences divide us,” Wiranto said at the opening of the National Coordination Meeting on the National Awareness for 2019 General Elections at Grand Paragon Hotel, Jakarta, Wednesday (27/3).

He added that it is common to have different political choice during the democratic party. “However, the most important thing is not to fight over the differences,” he said.

Wiranto expressed hope that people will make the most of the general elections to elect prospective leaders who have concepts, ideas and integrity.

“Elections are a five-year constitutional obligation to elect leaders. In the meantime, the leaders are challenged to show their achievements, track records, competencies and integrity to attract the public,” he said

Wiranto also called on all Indonesians to maintain the unity as the country is recognized worldwide through the Gallup Global Law and Order, which has named Indonesia as a country with the highest public trust, ranked 9th as the world’s safest country with index 89, and ranked 2nd in the investment destination list after the Philippines.

“Those are our achievements. Do not ruin it with conflicts for political reasons,” he added.

Previously, Director General of Political and Public Administration of Ministry of Home Affairs Sudarmo said that the meeting aims to create synergy between the Central Government, regional governments and all related stakeholders to create a peaceful atmosphere ahead of the 2019 simultaneous elections.

The event was attended by 2,500 people from central regions of Indonesia including Provincial and Regency /City personnel and election organizers. (PR Division of Home Ministry / ES)
