The use of electric vehicle (EV) can reduce fuel use and dependence on fuel imports, which can save around Rp798 trillion, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“By using electric vehicle, we can reduce fuel use and dependence on fuel imports, which has the potential to save approximately Rp798 trillion,” the President said during a limited meeting on the Acceleration of Electric Vehicles at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Monday (14/1).

Many countries are also vying to be at the forefront of developing electric vehicles, which are eco-friendly and can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the President said.

Therefore, in a bid to develop EV industry in the country, President Jokowi underscores several things, among others regulations on EV that must be immediately prepared and completed so that Indonesia can quickly become a major player in the industry and EV planning and development in an integrated and coordinated manner between relevant sectors and ministries/institutions.

“Don’t forget to involve private sector both in terms of research, innovation, budget, and providing needed infrastructure,” he said.

EV development, the President added, should also become a momentum to prepare Indonesian human resources to become technology-savvy and at the same time to create multiplier effects and add value for the economy by increasing local content requirements (TKDN).
