Food Security is Part of National Defense, President Jokowi Says

Defense is not only about weapon system, but also about food security, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.

The President explained that following the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) warning on the possibility of world food crisis, Indonesia needs to anticipate it quickly by creating strategic food reserves.

For that matter, Indonesia is planning to build a food estate in Kapuas and Pulau Pisang Regency in Central Kalimantan Province.

“Minister of Defense as the leading institution for the project has conveyed the estimated budget to build the food estate,” President Jokowi said on Monday (13/7).

Moreover, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Public Works and Public Housing will support the project, particularly in terms of food commodities, the President added. (UN/EN)
