The third President of the Republic of Indonesia Prof. Dr. Baharudin Jusuf (BJ) Habibie called on all Indonesian people to obey the constitution to response to potential growing discontent over simultaneous elections results to be announced on 22 May 2019.

“Do not take measures that only increase polarization and sharpen division within the society,” Habibie said in ‘a message to the nation’ uploaded on the Habibie Center Youtube channel, Sunday (19/5).

According to the former President, we need to strengthen national resilience amid the current unfavorable regional and global condition. By doing so, Indonesians are able to maintain their dignity as a nation.

Habibie also said that Indonesia had just held simultaneous general elections that reflect a joint effort to foster democracy in Indonesia. Currently, all layers of society are waiting for the General Election Commission (KPU), a commission that organized general election as mandated by the constitution, to announce the vote recapitulation result at the national level. There are still rooms for improvement in the organization of general election, he added.

“However, I strongly believe if we can improve the quality of democracy in the life of the nation and state, and also maintain the unity, we will be able to manifest noble ideals of the Indonesian people,” Habibie concluded. (ES)
