We often hear the saying: we can choose our friends, but we cannot choose our neighbours. Ideally, a neighbour is also a good friend. A sentiment that reflects the relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia.
The visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Jakarta Friday (06/27) showed that the ties between the two leaders are rooted not only in official state relations but also in a personal friendship that have flourished for nearly half a century.
Initially, PM Anwar’s visit was informal. However, the warmth of their friendship elevated the occasion to the level of an official visit.
“This is the nature of my friendship with Mr. Prabowo: we have always sought to strengthen our bond and demonstrate a loyal friendship that has endured for almost fifty years. On behalf of myself and my family, I wish to express my deepest appreciation,” said PM Anwar.
President Prabowo welcomed his guest with great warmth and respect. He emphasized that while certain technical issues still require further discussion, the commitment to enhancing Indonesia-Malaysia cooperation remains steadfast.
“For example, we have agreed that border issues may still require time to be resolved at the technical level. But in principle, we are committed to seeking solutions that benefit both sides,” President Prabowo remarked.
One concrete outcome of the meeting was an agreement to pursue joint economic development in the Ambalat region through a Joint Development approach, while gradually addressing the legal aspects.
The closeness between the two leaders was not merely symbolic. As PM Anwar departed the Presidential Palace, President Prabowo personally escorted him to his vehicle. The two leaders continued their warm conversation through the car window, a gesture reflecting trust and understanding of long-time friends.
Earlier, in a sincere atmosphere, President Prabowo hosted a luncheon featuring dishes that celebrated the rich culinary traditions of both Indonesia and Malaysia. The menu included Selada Prabu, Mangut Ikan, Iga Rawon, Kerapu Bakar Colo-Colo, Kailan Dua Rasa, and Nasi Lemak. For dessert, guests enjoyed Setup Tape Crème Brûlée, a unique blend of traditional flavours and modern innovation.
The strong bond between the two leaders serves as a solid foundation for greater harmony, stability, and mutual strength in Indonesia-Malaysia relations in the future. This is evidence that the best diplomacy often grows out of genuine friendship. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (RD/MMB)
