Government translators play a strategic role in supporting the Government’s programs as their works are often used as references.

“The works of the translators are often used as references,” said Deputy to Cabinet Secretary for Cabinet Work Support Thanon Aria Dewangga during the opening of the dissemination on government translators and interpreters (Functional Position of Translators) at Novotel Hotel in Makassar, South Sulawesi province, Thursday (25/7).

According to him, the Government in the past five years has been accelerating development so Indonesia can compete with other countries in various sectors, including in infrastructure, connectivity between one region and another, border posts and human capital.

“Infrastructure, connectivity, human capital development and vocational training are the Government’s top priorities for the next five years,” he said.

In relation to that, Thanon continued, translators are of particular importance in succeeding those Government’s programs.

Thanon further said that Cabinet Secretariat as the fostering institution of government translators and interpreters is obliged to foster those translators and interpreters at the national level, including to formulate related regulations, including Cabinet Secretariat Regulation Number 8 of 2016 on technical guidelines for the development of JFP.

Thanon went on to say that Government translators also play strategic roles in translating laws and regulations into English, which contribute to the improved rank of Indonesia’s Ease of Doing Business (EoDB).

He also expressed hope that websites of government institutions be it at central and regional level, are available in English so tourists and investors can obtain information relating to one specific issue.

Cabinet Secretariat, Thanon added, is also committed to improving competence of government translators and interpreters through technical guidance programs and disseminations held not only at home but also abroad. The disseminations are also a form of synergy between the Central Government and regional governments, he said.

For the record, government translators have participated in several international fora such as the 2018 WBG-IMF Annual Meeting and Bali Democracy Forum

In the meantime, South Sulawesi Provincial Administrative Assistant Tautoto Tana Ranggina – who represented Governor of South Sulawesi – said that the dissemination program this time serves as a forum for communication, coordination and consultation between Cabinet Secretariat and users regarding adjustment process of inpassing (position transfer) and dismissal in functional positions.

“This is very useful for us in promoting the role of government translators in South Sulawesi provincial, regency and city governments,” he said

Tautoto also expressed hopes that the participants can better understand about government translators and interpreters and other related issues. He also invited the participants who are interested to becoming government translators and interpreters. (PFP). (FID/EN)
