Indonesian Government has built low-cost apartments (rusun) and special houses (houses built to meet special needs) for prison officers on Nusakambangan Island.

“The apartments which we built for Nusakambangan prison officers are not just ordinary vertical housings. They have apartment-like quality so they are comfortable for living,”  Director General of Housing Provision to Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing Khalawi Abdul Hamid said during the inauguration of low-cost apartments for State Civil Apparatus (ASN) on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap,  Central Java, Thursday (22/8).

Khalawi stated that the development of low-cost apartments and special houses is an effort to improving the welfare of Nusakambangan prison officers so that they and their families can live in safer and comfortable houses.

These apartments are constructed using good quality building materials with granite floors. The Government also provides basic furniture such as bunk beds, single beds, closets, sofas, guest tables, chairs, and dining tables.

“We are ready to support Ministry of Law and Human Rights’ program, especially in providing decent housing for its employees. Not only in Nusakambangan, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has also built low-cost apartments for immigration officials in Bali and Batam,” Khalawi explained.

Two towers of low-cost apartments were built in Nusakambangan by Housing Development Work Unit of the Directorate General of Housing Provision of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing in 2018. The first tower is a four-story building provided for single state civil apparatus (ASN). The building consists of 50 rooms and each room can accommodate up to four people. Its construction costs around Rp16.1 billion. The second tower is a three-story building, with 42 residential units of type-36, provided for married ASN. The construction of this building reaches  Rp15.9 billion.

Meanwhile, special houses have been constructed for ASN in Nusakambangan prison area by Central Java’s Specific Non-Vertical Working Unit (SNVT). The Ministry has built 28 units of type-36 in 210 days from 4 June to 31 December 2018. Its construction costs  Rp4.648 billion. Each house is equipped with beds, dining table set, closet, and sofa.

On the occasion, Ministry of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly expressed his gratitude for the housing assistance. “We thank the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing for assistance in providing decent housing for Nusakambangan prison officers. In addition,  the project also serves as a way to train  Nusakambangan prisoners as construction workers,” he said. (BKP Kementerian PUPR/EN)
