Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has started the construction of the Tiu Suntuk Dam in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province.

The dam, located in Brang Ene district, will have a capacity of 55.90 million m3, and will increase the number of water reservoirs in Indonesia, especially in West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono has said that the Government will continue the construction of dam and irrigation to support sustainable agricultural production. The Tiu Suntuk Dam is one of the national strategic programs to maintain continuity of irrigation water supply for rice fields.

The construction of Tiu Suntuk Dam is carried out by the Nusa Tenggara I river area management (BWS) of Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, with reservoir of 337 hectares. The dam will supply water for an irrigation area of 1,743 hectares covering the area of Taliwang and Brang Ene districts in West Sumbawa Regency. The two districts are considered to have quite large agricultural land, but most of them have experienced a decline in productivity due to lack of water supply.

The Tiu Suntuk Dam will also increase the water supply to the irrigation system of the Kalimantong I Dam which is located in the downstream area. The irrigation area of the Kalimantong I Dam has a total area of 1,368 hectares, of which 46 hectares will be supplied by the Tiu Suntuk Dam.

The Tiu Suntuk Dam construction is divided into two stages. The first construction stage has started since 23 January 2020 with contractors PT Nindya Karya and PT Bahagia Bangun Nusa. Meanwhile, the auction for the second stage is underway.

The first stage construction includes preparation, cofferdam, main dam, intake structure, hydro mechanical and electrical works, and other construction works. Currently, the construction of offices and workers’ barracks, excavating the main dam, and excavating the extractor building are carried out. As of the end of July 2020, the overall construction progress has reached 7%.

The cost of the dam construction is Rp1.41 trillion with the construction period of 1,415 calendar days and is targeted for completion in December 2023. The type of dam is random rock fill with a peak elevation of approximately 97 meters.

In addition to irrigation, another function of the Tiu Suntuk Dam is a flood control infrastructure for areas traversed by the Rea watershed, especially Taliwang district which is the capital of West Sumbawa Regency. The water reservoir of the dam is designed to reduce flooding by 426 m³/second. The dam will also provide supply of 68 liters/second raw water for West Sumbawa Regency and as a source of electricity of 0.81 MW. (Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing/EN)
