Gov’t Builds Way Apu Dam in Maluku Province

In a bid to boost productivity in the agricultural sector, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing continues to build dams in various regions including Way Apu dam in Buru regency, Maluku province.

This dam with a capacity of 50.05 million cubic meters is targeted for completion in August 2023.

According to Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, the management of water resources and irrigation should continue in order to support sustainable agricultural production. In addition, the dam can also function as a source of raw water and energy, flood control, and tourist destination that will boost the local economy.

“The construction of the dam will be followed by the construction of the irrigation network. Thus, the dam can be utilized immediately because the water will certainly flow to the farmers’ fields,” the Minister said, as quoted from the Ministry’s website, Monday (19/07).

The construction progress of the main dam has reached 24.4 percent. Meanwhile, the construction progress of the spillway has reached 25.5 percent.

The Way Apu dam is expected to provide great benefits for the surrounding community, such as the availability of irrigation water covering an area of ​​10,000 hectares and the availability of raw water with a discharge of 0.5 cubic meters per second.

In addition, this dam also has the ability to reduce flooding by 557 cubic meters per second.
