Director General of Information and Public Communication of Ministry of Communications and Informatics Usman Kansong has called for stakeholders to make Indonesia’s chairmanship successful in the 43rd ASEAN Summit.

“We cannot let this moment slip away. We must continue to build a good nation branding in the public eye,” he said in his written remarks for the Technical Guidance on Government Social Media Management related to the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Tuesday (08/29), adding that Indonesia’s successful 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship will enhance the country’s national branding and reputation.

According to Usman, based on the 2021 Nation Brands Index, Indonesia ranked 62nd out of 100 countries, increased by eight ranks from the previous year.

“Indonesia has successfully levelled up by eight points from the previous year and it also showed improvement of Indonesia’s image and reputation,” he said while stressing the significant role of public perception in enhancing the national image.

Therefore, Usman called for all Government employees to utilize social media as a channel to disseminate information about Indonesia’s 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship, including the 43rd ASEAN Summit held on September 5-7, and to influence as well as create public opinions.

“The power of social media can influence public opinions, even government policies. Thus, social media today has become a channel that is effective in shaping public perception and opinion,” he said while urging Government public relation officers to present information about Indonesia’s chairmanship with a simple narrative that is easy to understand.

“Public information related to Indonesia’s 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship needs to be presented in simple narratives so that the public can easily understand it and will not be trapped with disinformation and/or misinformation spread in social media. Therefore, all of our efforts to create a good public opinion about Indonesia’s 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship can lead to a good nation branding and reputation in the public eye,” he said.

For the record, the technical guidance agenda also included a training of content creation for social media and a site visit to the ASEAN Secretariat building.

On that occasion, Ministry of Communications and Informatics also gave appreciation for ministries/Government institutions/regional governments for their performance in the successful organization of the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara province.

The institutions that received an award were Ministry of State Secretariat in ministry category, Cabinet Secretariat in Government institution category, and Provincial Government of Southeast Sulawesi in regional government category. (UN) (DH/MMB)
