Gov’t Committed to Completing 2020 PON Venues as Scheduled
Amidst the covid-19 outbreak, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing is committed to completing the construction of four sports venues for the 2020 PON National Games in Papua province.
Nevertheless, the Ministry stated it would continue to pay attention to the safety and health protocols and adhere to policies of the Central Government and regional governments.
“Infrastructure development for the 2020 PON in Papua must be done in detail starting from the design, construction to supervision stages,” Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said.
The four sports arenas being built by the Ministry’s Directorate General of Public Buildings, Planning and Land Cipta Karya in Jayapura Regency are among others aquatic venues and Istora Papua Bangkit in the Kampung Harapan Sports area in East Sentani District and the Cricket venue and Hockey field (indoor and outdoor) in the Doyo Baru sports complex in Waibu District.
As of 26 March 2020, construction progress of Istora venues already reached 82.95%, aquatic venues reached 80.87% and Cricket venues and indoor and outdoor Hockey field reached 92.14%.
Head of the Directorate’s Center for Educational, Sports and Market Infrastructure Development Iwan Suprijanto said that a joint agreement had been made between Governor of Papua, a member of Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkompimda), regents/mayors and all stakeholders in Papua province related to prevention, control, and handling of covid-19 outbreak.
One of the agreements is the issuance of policies for the closure of airports and passenger ship at entry points of Papuan region.
“This is bound to affect the construction progress of the PON venues because of the difficulties in shipping material from outside the Papuan region, hiring more workers, and bringing in certification expert. However, the Ministry continues to complete venues as scheduled,” he said.
For the record, the hosting of 2020 PON in Papua is expected to take place on 20 October – 2 November.
The construction of aquatic venues has started since December 2018 and it is expected that the completion target in July 2020 can be met. The construction costs are allocated from the 2018-2020 State Budget amounting to Rp401.058 billion. The aquatic venues will be equipped with pool facilities that meet the standard of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) – international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competition in water sports – and field of play (FOP) standard lighting, master clock on the 1st and 2nd floors, scoreboard and sound systems, air system, surveillance cameras, and audience stands.
It also has parking lots, landscaping, drainage and supporting buildings adjusted to the area boundaries.
Meanwhile, the construction of Istora Papua Bangkit started in November 2018 and is targeted to be completed in June 2020, with PT PP (Persero) acting as contractor with a work value of Rp257.5 billion and a management consultant of PT. Virama Karya worth Rp4.8 billion.
Istora Papua Bangkit is equipped with a regional plaza area, including parking lots inside and outside the Istora area with dome-shaped steel pipe roof frame construction that has a stretch of approximately 85 meters. Istora venue’s roof truss structure is recorded as the longest span of dome steel roof in the country. Both aquatic venues and Istora venues are located in the Kampung Harapan Sports area of 32 hectares.
Papua Bangkit Main Stadium is also being built in this complex equipped with a scoreboard, time system equipment, and LED lights that meet international football federation FIFA standard, with a power of 1,800 Lux, warm-up field, stadium safe zone, and parking lots.
Meanwhile, the total budget for the construction of Cricket venues and indoor and outdoor Hockey field amounts to Rp277 billion, with contractor PT. Nindya Karya and management consultant of PT Bina Karya worth Rp4.9 billion.
The works have been carried out since December 2018 and are targeted to be completed by June 2020. In addition to the construction of four venues, the Ministry in 2020 is tasked to complete three new PON venues, among others, roller skating venues, archery venues, and rowing venues whose construction have started at the end of February and the arrangement of Kampung Harapan Area as a supporting area for Istora and aquatic venues that began at the end of January.
As for the arrangement of Doyo Baru Area as a supporting area for Cricket venues, indoor and outdoor Hockey, it began in late December 2019. (BKP Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing/SM/EN)
