Gov’t Committed to Post-Quake Reconstruction: President Jokowi

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that he continues to closely monitor post-quake mitigation measures in Lombok after the quake hit the resort island on Sunday (5/8).

“I get updated reports from the frontline regarding the number of dead and injured victims, as well as the scale of damage in houses, schools and public facilities,” President Jokowi said at Presidential Office on Friday (10/8) in introductory remarks to the Limited Cabinet Meeting on Bui Quake Mitigation Measures.

President Jokowi stressed that the first priority is to rescue missing victims and stated that he gets regular report regarding the intensive victim evacuation that involves heavy equipment. The Government would also maintain supply of logistics, tents, blankets, food -particularly baby food-, medicines, water supply and electricity-related supply to affected areas, he added.

After the emergency response is complete, according to President Jokowi, the Government will begin the rehabilitation and reconstruction measures to repair damaged buildings, houses and public facilities. Regarding the aftershocks, the President has instructed the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), all Government Ministries/Institutions and regional governments to intensively educate the people, particularly in disaster-prone areas, on disaster mitigation.
