Gov’t Ensures Readiness of 4 Venues for 2020 PON in Papua

The Indonesian Government through Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing continues to complete the construction work of four venues in Jayapura Regency to host the 20th National Games (PON) in Papua Province this year.

The venues include an aquatic venue and ISTORA Papua Bangkit in the Kampung Harapan Sports Area, East Sentani District and cricket venue and Hockey Field (Indoor and Outdoor) in Kampung Doyo Baru, Waibu District.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono stated that the completion of the venues construction was targeted in a timely manner to support the smooth implementation of the 20th PON, with due regard to safety aspects which involved supervision from the Construction Safety Committee (K2). “The construction of sports infrastructure and facilities for the 20th PON must be very thorough, starting from the design, construction to supervision stages,” the Minister said.

Head of the Center for Educational, Sports, and Market Infrastructure Development (PSPPOP) Iwan Suprijanto, accompanying People’s Consultative Assembly Speaker Bambang Soesatyo, carried out an inspection in the construction areas to ensure the readiness of sports infrastructure and facilities as planned.

During the visit, Bambang expressed his high appreciation to the Ministry on the development of the venues. “The PON venues are not only the pride of Papuans but also the pride of all Indonesian people,” he said.

In addition, Bambang said, the construction of PON venues is expected to encourage young people, Papuan athletes to be more enthusiastic and accomplished in becoming champions both at national and international levels.

“Earlier, we saw the aquatic venue and it was not inferior to the one in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta, so we expect the Papuans to be enthusiastic to become athletes from various sports and win in the PON later,” Bambang stated.

Iwan ensured that all sports and supporting facilities will be ready in time and can be utilized for the 20th PON slated to be held from 20 October to 2 November 2020 and a test event beforehand. “The test event ascertains whether the venue is appropriate for use or not,” he explained.

In the meantime, the progress of the construction of the aquatic arena has reached 81.40%. It is faster than the initial target of 73.70%. It is expected to be completed by July 2020. Currently, physical work is being carried out such as installation of steel frames, aluminium composite panels (ACP), pool liner, glass reinforced concrete (GRC), and solar panels. The Papua Aquatic Venue was built in accordance with the International Swimming Federation (FINA) standards using the 2018-2020 State Budget of Rp401,058 billion and PT. Ciriajasa Cipta Mandiri acts as its management consultant.

Meanwhile, the progress of the construction work of Istora Papua Bangkit has reached 77.99% or faster than the initial schedule of 73.98%.  The works currently underway include erection of beam D14/26-28, Impact Baut Rafter, plumbing work, work on utility building formwork. The venue was built using the budgets of state-owned construction and investment firm PT. PP amounting toRp278.57 billion and its management consultant PT Virama Karya of Rp4.8 billion).

Furthermore, the construction of the Cricket arena and the Hockey field both indoors and outdoors has reached 86.25% or faster than the initial plan of 82.28%. The work is expected to be completed by June 2020. The works currently underway include installation of scoring board and metal roof on indoor hockey field, installation of light pole at the outdoor hockey field, installation of ACP for cricket stands amounting toRp277 billion by PT Nindya Karya (contractor) and Rp4.9 billion PT Bina Karya (management consultant) respectively.

In addition, the Ministry has also built a number of facilities in Kampung Harapan (32 hectare), including main stadium, training field, aquatic center, Istora (Multipurpose Sports Center),  Reserved – commercial area (hotel, mall, cinema), shooting range, car and motorcycle parking lots, normalized river, stadium’s main gate, and utility area. The total construction cost of the area was Rp134 billion by PT. PP (contractor) and Rp3.8 billion by PT. Virama Karya respectively.

In Doyo Baru, the Ministry worked on continuation of works of south side fence of the cricket field, molding work of the Keet Direction area, and others. To date, the progress has reached 8.98%. The budgets for the construction are Rp64.9 billion by PT Cahaya Bina Karya (contractor) and Rp2.45 billion by PT Ciriajasa Engineering Consultant. (BKP Kementerian PUPR/EN)
