Gov’t Establishes Steering Committee for Acceleration of Papua Special Autonomy Development

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Friday (10/21) issued Presidential Regulation Number 121 of 2022 on Steering Committee for Acceleration of Papua Special Autonomy Development. The Committee chaired by Vice President is directly responsible to the President.

Members of the Committee are among others, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of National Development Planning (PPN)/the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Minister of Finance, one representative of each province in Papua who are indigenous peoples of Papua and not working for the Government and not members of a political party.

“Papua Steering Committee has duties to synchronize, harmonize, evaluate, and coordinate the acceleration of development and implementation of special autonomy in Papua based on provisions of laws and regulations,” the Regulation reads.

In performing the duties, the Steering Committee executes these following functions:

  1. providing general policy directions for the implementation of special autonomy and acceleration of development in the Papua region;
  2. conducting synchronization, harmonization, and coordination as well as providing guidance, supervision, evaluation, reporting, and ensuring accountability for the management of planning, budgeting, funding, revenue, and administration of government in the framework of special autonomy and acceleration of development in Papua Province which are carried out by ministries/institutions and regional governments of Papua Province;
  3. providing considerations, directives, and recommendations for solving strategic problems and issues in the implementation of special autonomy and acceleration of development in the Papua region;
  4. ensuring the implementation of special autonomy and the acceleration of development in the Papua region by referring to the Master Plan for the Acceleration of Development in Papua and the Action Plan for the Acceleration of Development in Papua for the medium term;
  5. submitting reports on the implementation of special autonomy and acceleration of development in the Papua region to the President; and
  6. carrying out other functions assigned by the President.

“The Presidential Regulation shall take effect as of the date of its promulgation,” the Regulation reads. (UN) (RAS/LW)
