Gov’t Improves Sea Transportation Services
Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi demanded the ships boarded should not exceed the specified capacity for safety reasons.
“Safety is the most important thing. Safety during homecoming Eid seasons is related to the number of travelers, especially ship passengers, which should not exceed the permission given by Directorate General of Sea Transportation. Therefore, we have a manifest to control the compatibility between the number of passengers on land and inside the ship,” the Minister said during his visit to Kumai Port, West Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan, Saturday (25/5), to ensure Eid 2019 Transportation readiness.
Budi also asked port authority and state-owned shipping company PT Pelni to ensure the availability of safety equipment on board.
“The viability of the ships (in Kumai Port) is good. PT Pelni will also add more ships to Kumai Port. In the future, after discussion with PT Pelni, there will be premium ships on the Kumai-Central Java (route). The ships will have good services. (The passengers) will pay between Rp400,000-500,000 to commute with the ships which will allow the passengers to sleep on board. They will enjoy it,” the Minister said.
The Port, during the homecoming period, was recorded as a busy port with passengers going back and forth to Java, especially Central Java. For this reason, he visited the Port to ensure that all facilities at the Port were adequate.
On this occasion, the Minister also had the opportunity to directly interact with ship passengers and obtain input from them.
“We hope the Regent and PT Pelni can carry out the homecoming services well,” the Minister said.
After visiting Kumai Port, the Minister headed to Iskandar Airport where he met airport staffers and encouraged them to provide best services during homecoming Eid seasons. (BKIP Kemenhub/EN)
