The Government has issued a Joint Decree (SKB) on road traffic engineering and crossings during the mudik (annual exodus) and reverse flow periods ahead of the 2024/1445 Hijri Eid al-Fitr.

“We are preparing for the operational and policy aspects to control, regulate, and handle traffic comprehensively with ministries and institutions at the central and regional levels, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector,” Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said, as quoted from the Ministry’s website on Monday (03/18).

Data from the Ministry’s Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) survey reveals that the mobility of people nationwide during Eid al-Fitr this year could reach 71.7 percent of Indonesia’s population, or 193.6 million people.

“This survey has proven accurate in providing the estimated mobility of people in 2023, reaching 123.8 million people, or 45.67 percent,” he said.

Director General of Land Transportation of Ministry of Transportation Hendro Sugiatno said that the traffic engineering measures taken by the Government include restrictions on freight transportation, a one-way system, and an even-odd system.

“In addition to restrictions on freight transportation, during the Eid 2024 holiday, there will be traffic engineering measures that include a one-way system, a contraflow system, and an odd-even system,” Hendro said.

Hendro highlighted that these measures were taken to ensure the smooth flow of traffic by prioritizing comfort and security as well as the safety of travelers.

For the record, some vehicles are exempted from the odd-even system, including official state vehicles, red license plate vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, yellow license plate vehicles, EVs, toll road operational vehicles, and logistics vehicles.

Restrictions on freight vehicles are also imposed on freight cars with three or more axes, semi-trailers, and trailers, as well as freight cars transporting excavated products, mining products, and building materials.

No restrictions will be imposed on freight vehicles transporting fuel or gas, money, election logistics, animals and animal feed, fertilizers, natural disaster relief, or staple goods.

“Restrictions on the mobility of freight transportation during the Eid holiday will be implemented to ensure smooth traffic. The volume of vehicles is predicted to increase, both on toll roads and non-toll roads,” said Hendro.

The restrictions will apply from Friday, April 5, 2024, at 09.00 local time until Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 08.00 local time.  (PR of Ministry of Transportation/UN) (FI/MUR)
