President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has signed Presidential Regulation on Electric Vehicle on Monday (5/8).

Following the issuance of this regulation, automotive industry is expected to immediately start developing EVs.

“Electric vehicles highly depend on battery capacity and our country has all needed materials to produce it. Therefore, the Government will support the development of EVs that are affordable for the people since they will mostly use local content,” President Jokowi told reporters after inaugurating the new ASEAN Secretariat building in Jakarta, Thursday (8/8).

According to the President, it will take years to develop EV industry because the price of an EV is much more expensive than that of conventional vehicles. However, the President expressed hope that the use of local contents will cut the price and boost sales.

In addition, to boost sales of EV as an effort to reduce air pollution, President Jokowi encouraged regional governments such as Jakarta’s regional government to provide incentives for those buying EVs, in the form of among others free parking, free documents fee, and other subsidies.

“A number of countries have provided subsidies for those who buy EVs. In the meantime, Jakarta can spearhead the use of EV for transportation, such as buses and taxis. I have ordered Minister of Transportation to implement the policy,” President Jokowi said. (HIM / JAY / ES)
