The basic infrastructure development in new capital located in North Penajam Paser regency, East Kalimantan province, has started with construction of Sepaku Semoi Dam and Mentawir Nursery.

“The dam construction shows that basic infrastructure development has started. In July, the construction of the main road from Balikpapan toll road will begin,” President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has stated when inspecting the construction of the Sepaku Semoi Dam, Wednesday (06/22).

The President also said that the Mentawir Nursery shows that the development at the new capital complies with the environmental principles.

On that occasion, the President ordered relevant stakeholders to complete the construction of Sepaku Semoi Dam faster than the target set in the plan. The dam was previously set to be completed in December 2023, but Director General of Water Resources, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing Jarot Widyoko said that it will be completed in January or February 2023.

The President further said that raw water from the dam will be processed to supply water need for 1.5 million people.

“The water supply will be in the form of ready-to-drink water,” the President remarked.

In the meantime, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono reaffirmed the commitment to provide ready-to-drink water supply. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/UN) (RI/MMB)
