Gov’t Launches 100 GWp Solar Initiative, Beginning with 14 Plants Across Six Provinces
President Prabowo Subianto officially launched Indonesia’s 100-gigawatt peak (GWp) solar power program.
This initiative began with 14 solar power plant projects across six provinces with a combined capacity of 5.3 GWp.
“This afternoon, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by the grace of God Almighty, I am Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby officially launch the 100 GWp solar power plant program. The program begins with 14 solar power plants in six provinces, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, Bangka Belitung Islands, and Riau Islands, with a combined capacity of 5.3 GWp,” the President said at the launch at the Gilimanuk Site Solar Power Plant in Jembrana regency, Bali province.
In his remarks, the President also praised the scale of the initiative and emphasized its strategic importance. He also said that the Government is targeting 100 GWp of solar capacity within three years.
“We will build the 100 GWp of solar power capacity. We are very serious about this, and our target is to achieve 100 GWp within three years,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia reported that this strategic program is expected to deliver significant benefits.
This program, he said, could reduce state-budget subsidy by replacing diesel-fired generation, cut diesel consumption, create jobs, and lower carbon emissions.
“The total investment required for the 100 GWp program is approximately US$73 billion, or more than Rp1,140 trillion. Through this project, we can generate annual subsidy savings of Rp73.9 trillion and create approximately 5.52 million jobs,” the Minister said.
The 14 solar power plants that were launched are as follows:
- Tembesi Solar Power Plant in Riau Islands province;
- Sembur Island Solar Power Plant in Riau Islands province;
- Rengit Island Solar Power Plant in Bangka Belitung Islands province;
- Saguling Solar Power Plant in West Java province;
- Purwakarta Solar Power Plant in West Java province;
- Jatiluhur Solar Power Plant in West Java province;
- Cirata Solar Power Plant in West Java province;
- Jatigede Solar Power Plant in West Java province;
- Gajah Mungkur Reservoir Solar Power Plant in Central Java province;
- Karangkates Solar Power Plant in East Java province;
- Madura Solar Power Plant in East Java province;
- Pasuruan Solar Power Plant in East Java province;
- Banyuwangi Solar Power Plant in East Java province; and
- Gilimanuk Site Solar Power Plant in Bali province.
This initiative, the Minister added, is a joint effort involving all relevant parties, including other ministries and agencies, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), and the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
