Home Affairs Ministry has appointed Riau Deputy Governor Isdianto as acting governor of Riau Islands province, replacing Nurdin Basirun, who has been named as suspect in a bribery case.

The Ministry’s Secretary General Hadi Prabowo on Saturday (13/7) handed over letter of appointment to Hadi. The appointment is based on a decree number 121.21/6344/Sekjen dated 12 July 2019.

Commenting on the appointment, Hadi said that the sanction imposed on regional heads committing corruption should give deterrent effects, adding that measures to prevent similar cases should be taken and upheld by regional head in every province.

“Preventive measures must continue to be taken. People have already known that it (accepting bribes) breaks the law, but if they still commit it anyway. It is beyond our capacity. The sanction imposed on regional heads arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) should bring deterrent effect to them, but it all depends on the person and integrity,” Hadi said.

Previously, Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo ensured that regional government of Riau Islands will keep running after its governor was named a suspect over a bribery case by the KPK. Therefore, the Ministry, he added, decided to appoint Deputy Governor Isdianto as the acting governor. (Puspen Kemendagri/ES)
