Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung and the Head of Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) explained the results of a Limited Meeting (20/1), at the Presidential Office, Jakarta

The Government is preparing two legal basis namely Presidential Regulation (Perpres) and Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) on the prevention and handling of child abuse crimes.

“The President has agreed to issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) and a Presidential Regulation (Perpres),” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said in a press statement after a Limited Meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Wednesday (20/1) afternoon.

According to Pramono, the Presidential Regulation to be issued is on the prevention and handling of child abuse crimes in educational institutions.

“So far, as the Ministry of Education and Culture reported, when a child abuse case occurs, people only do two things: either neglect it or report it to the police,” Pramono said.

Meanwhile, in the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu), Pramono added, it states that the perpetrators of sexual crimes against children will be castrated as the punishment.

“The President asked us to study this issue because we know there are pros and cons among the public,” Pramono said.

Also attending the press conference were Minister of Education and Culture Anies Baswedan and Head of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) Asrorun Niam Sholeh. (FID/UN/ES) (RAS/EP/YM/Naster)
