The Government has reaffirmed commitment to achieve the target of meat production self-sufficiency in 2026, according to Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Economic Affairs Satya Bhakti Parikesit.

“Towards the end of President Joko Widodo’s administration, we need to review how far the program and policy have progressed in relation to increasing national beef production, then develop a strategy and commitment with all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the policy during the next Presidential administration,” Bhakti said in a Focused Group Discussion on Strategies for Increasing Meat Production Towards National Meat Production Self-Sufficiency, Thursday (04/25).

Bhakti said that in the 1970s Indonesia was listed as a beef exporter, with shipments of approximately 15,000 cattle and buffalos to Singapore and Hong Kong.

“The data issued by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2022 shows that Indonesia’s beef import were recorded at 225,000 tons with a value of US$ 861.5 million, with 81.2 percent of total import from two countries, namely Australia with more than 105,000 tons and India with 77,500 tons of meat,” he said.

According to Bhakti, the high dependence on imported products is highly correlated with the high price of beef in the country.

On that occasion, the Deputy also expressed hope that the FGD attended by Ministries/Institutions can produce solutions to increase production as well as to strengthen measures to achieve national meat self-sufficiency. (FID/UN) (RI/LW)
