The Government through Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing organized the arrangement of Morotai National Strategic Tourism Area, North Maluku, particularly the areas of Army Dock Beach and Trikora Monument.

Morotai Tourism Area is renowned for maritime tourism since the area is surrounded by beautiful small islands that is dubbed as “the Pearl of the Pacific” and for its historical sites. Due to its strategic location, fortresses were built in Morotai Islands during the World War II. Thus, there are a lot of war relics in Morotai that is considered a heritage tourism potential.

“In the new normal era, the Government believes tourism sector is one of economic sectors that can recover quickly. Therefore, infrastructure development in the National Strategic Tourism Area (KSPN) will be carried on,” Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said.

The Minister added that infrastructure development in the KSPN is carried on in comprehensive manner that consists of the development of area, roads, raw water and clean water facilities, waste management facility, sanitary facility, and rehabilitation of settlement of the local through infrastructure development planning.

For the record, Army Dock Beach is the place where Allied Forces soldiers enter Morotai during World War. They then built a military base in the beach in which the remaining can be found in several areas of the beach. Army Dock Beach is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Morotai.

Trikora Monument is built to remember the struggle of Indonesian soldiers during Trikora operation in the liberation of West Papua from Dutch Army. In Morotai, Indonesian soldiers utilized the remaining of Allied Forces soldiers equipment from the World War II to free West Papua.

In 2019, the Ministry has completed the arrangement of Army Dock area to increase its historical value. The work covers landscaping jobs, landfill, trees planting, and construction of amphitheater, toilet, septic tank, mushalla, plaza, and information center.

The project is carried on in 2020 after the Ministry finalized tender of two-year contract with a total value of Rp48.14 billion with contractor PT. Reza Multi Sarana. The work covers rehabilitation of Trikora Monument Museum, arrangement of General Douglas MacArthur landing area in Zumzum Island which was used as a commando center for the Allied Force during World War II, readjustment of Air Kaca tourism spot, and Gotalamo Central Business District as the new economic growth center to increase people’s economy.
