Gov’t Strengthens Health Protection Measures for Communities Affected by Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption

The Government is stepping up measures to address the health impacts of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption, particularly among communities in the affected areas.

During a limited meeting on developments in natural disaster response chaired by President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace on Monday (09/07), Minister of Health Budi Sadikin outlined a range of health measures to protect the public from exposure to volcanic ash.

According to the Minister, respiratory problems are the primary health concern arising from exposure to ash from Mount Anak Krakatau eruption.

He went on to say that volcanic ash containing silica can enter the lungs and potentially cause harm. Residents in affected areas are therefore advised to limit outdoor activities over the coming week.

“The primary health concern is respiratory problems, Mr. President, because the ash contains silica that can damage the lungs. We therefore advise people in affected areas to remain indoors this week. If they must go outside, they should wear masks,” the Minister said, adding that they should also wear protective eyewear to reduce the risk of exposure.

“The second health concern is eye irritation, Mr. President, as the ash can enter the eyes. People are therefore advised to avoid going outdoor. If they must go outside, they should wear protective eyewear,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted the potential effects of volcanic ash on the skin, noting that ash particles that settle on the skin can cause irritation. Residents in affected areas are advised to wear clothing that covers their skin if they must go outdoors.

“The third concern is skin irritation as the dust can adhere to the skin and its particles are abrasive. Again, people are advised to avoid going outdoor, Mr. President. If they must go outside, they should wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers,” he said.

These measures form part of the health sector’s response for communities affected by the eruption. The Government advises the public to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate protective measures if they must go outside.

“That concludes our specific interventions for the communities affected by the eruption,” the Minister stated.

The Government also urges residents in affected areas to follow official information and directives and remain vigilant against exposure to volcanic ash.
